To my grandfather, a WWII veteran (45th Infantry Division) and Purple Heart recipient—RIP. Thank you for showing me what true patriotism means and for teaching me that, no matter how difficult a day may be, there is always something to be grateful for. I will forever cherish the memory of you taking me to the welcome home event for soldiers after the 1991 Gulf War. Thank you for seeing something in me that I didn’t recognize until I was 40— but I understand now.
